When using a burner that covers the top of the incense (such as the burning tray of a Kincho-ko 30-coil can or a commercially available pig-shaped mosquito coil holder), "tar" may accumulate on the underside of the burner's top, which could cause the incense fire to go out or, conversely, flare up if it falls. Be sure to clean the tar (scrub with a sponge, brush, etc., using neutral detergent) approximately every 10 coils.
